You don't need much to start

Many clients come with just a name and a rough idea of where their family was from. That's often enough to begin. I've traced families from a single census entry and a grandmother's memory of a village name.

If you have more β€” old documents, family photos with names on the back, stories passed down β€” bring those too. Every detail helps.

Common questions

How do I know if my family's records even exist?

For most families researched in Canada, the records exist β€” they just need to be found. Census records, immigration files, military service records, church registers, and vital statistics cover most families back to the mid-1800s, and often further. The consultation will help us understand what's available for your specific family.

What if I don't know much about my family?

That's perfectly fine β€” and very common. A full name, an approximate era, and a geographic region (even something broad like "Ontario" or "Eastern Europe") is often enough to begin. We'll start from what you know and work outward.

How long does research take?

A Family Tree Starter typically takes one to two weeks. More complex family history research depends on scope β€” I'll give you a realistic timeline in your quote. I always communicate progress as I go.

Do you research families outside Canada?

Yes. I specialize in Canadian genealogy but regularly trace families back to their origins in the British Isles, Ireland, France, Ukraine, Poland, Germany, and other countries of origin. International research may require additional sources and is quoted accordingly.

What do I receive at the end?

A clear, sourced research report β€” digital PDF β€” with all findings, the records accessed, and any documents found. Family Tree packages include a visual family tree. Heritage Story packages include a written narrative history. Everything is yours to keep and share.

What if you can't find anything?

Sometimes records are destroyed, lost, or simply don't exist for a given family or time period. If I hit a genuine dead end, I'll tell you honestly and explain what alternatives might exist. You won't be charged for a result that doesn't materialize without warning.
